Put in writing
I need to put this in writing. I had a headache all day. I came home. I forced myself to do Insanity. The headache is gone.
Untitled
This weekend was sort of a wash. Especially considering the way I felt on Saturday. I vow to make this week a near perfect week.
It all started off on Thursday when I had to leave work around 11 due to a killer headache. I'm not sure if it was a migraine but it began as soon as I woke up. 4 Aleve and 4 hours later it was still pounding. I spent the afternoon and night sleeping and recovering.
Friday I planned to workout after work, but it was one of the first beautiful days so far this Spring. Instead, Marvin and I snagged some outdoor seats at Blockheads for some margaritas and burritos. I was able to limit myself to two drinks (one marg and one beer), and only half a burrito. I also ordered my burrito with brown rice and a whole wheat wrap to make it slightly more healthy.
Saturday I also planned to workout, and I did, but had to stop about 3/4 of the way through because I felt SO nauseous. Marvin says I always complain about feeling nauseous during the workouts (it is a common feeling I have) but this time it was BAD. Usually I can push through it but not if I actually feel like I'm about to puke.
Saturday night we went to a friend's for dinner. I managed to stay away from the tortilla chips, crackers, fried chicken, and rice. I stuck to healthy options like raw veggies, hummus, pork, and salad. But I somehow still squeezed in about 40 pieces of cheese, 3 cookies, and 2 glasses of wine. Oops :-(
I also felt fat the entire time I was at my friend's. I didn't particularly like what I was wearing (even though it was just jeans and black sweater) and I felt so bloated that my pants were squeezing me the whole time. I HATE feeling that way. I'm sure I don't actually look any different than I normally do, but I feel different and it matters. I just want to get to a place where I don't feel like that anymore, ever again.
Sunday I also planned to workout, but Marvin and I were soooo lazy. We spend the morning/afternoon lounging in the yard talking and playing games. Then we moved onto the couch. We did squeeze out about a mile walk though, so I felt slightly better. I also cooked some chicken and broccoli for the week. I wound up feeling nauseous AGAIN so I skipped dinner. Around 10pm I felt better and had a rice cake with peanut better.
This nausea better stop! There is absolutely no reason for it except for the possibility that it is yet another PMS - well really DMS (during) side effect that my body has picked up. As I get older, I seem to develop more and more.
Today I have a yelp event so I know I'll be straying somewhat from the healthy plan... but I am FORCING myself to do Insanity before I go. This will make for a super rushed evening (get home around 5, workout, shower, dress, and take the train all the way back down to the financial district by 7) but I know it will be worth it.

BBQ
The past two days of eating have just been so-so. I have been S T A R V I N G for the past 48 hours and wanting to eat non-stop. Let's start with this picture:
Yup. That's a plate piled high of BBQ. Chicken, pork, beef. Sweet potato. Cornbread. And one pinch of macaroni cheese. That's what I ate for lunch today, courtesy of the school.
Sigh.
Anyway. I DID do Insanity last night and I also walked to and from dinner (about 2 miles). At dinner, I stuck to mostly healthy choices and drank NO alcohol.. even though it was BYOB. Woohoo!

On Healing
I've been thinking a lot about healing since last Monday. How does someone "heal" the impact of a bombing at an event that's meant to be fun-filled, innocent, joyous? I've been a spectator at many marathons, in addition to the Boston, and the feeling of waiting for your friend/loved one/significant other to run by - or cross the finish line, is indescribable. The happiness and giddiness almost bubbles over, as you stand there anticipating the moment you can cheer on your brave friend, sister, brother, boyfriend, running by.
As you tiptoe to crane your neck over the edge of the barricade, squinting to view the runners approaching, who would ever imagine, even for a split second, a bomb exploding behind them?
How can we all put this behind us? Should we?
My mom always said that I became so severely affected by other people's problems because I project everything onto myself. What if I have that rare skin disease I saw on TV? What if MY grandma/grandpa gets cancer too? What if MY apartment gets broken into? What if I was at the marathon last Monday? My sister? My friends?
Its not only that though. I have a big heart. The empathy I feel for other people guides my whole life. How I interact with people, the kind of jokes I make or don't make, my relationship, my career. I just can't stop asking myself how this possibly happened? How can someone care so little about the lives of other people? How can I stop forgetting how those directly impacted must have felt?
I know time heals everything but for now, I still feel it. And I'm not sure that's such a bad thing.
Overall, this week has been kind of on and off with exercise and eating. Monday & Tuesday were great with eating and exercising. Wednesday I skipped the workout and sort of went off the wagon with eating... also went out for food and drinks on Wednesday. Thursday was OK with eating but I got about halfway through Insanity and felt extremely sick. Friday I skipped again because I went out for drinks and food straight from work.
Saturday I made the executive decision to go back to Month 1 workouts. I have been having a REALLY hard time with the Month 2 workouts. I'm finding myself dreading the workouts in the car ride home from school, as opposed to feeling reluctant, but pumped. During the workouts, I am really struggling to complete a set and even get through some of the exercises. I feel dead at the end as opposed to rejuvenated. On Saturday I went back to a Month 1 workout and it was great. It was still REALLY hard but I felt a lot more successful and was even able to push myself with some of the moves. I emailed my coach and he said a lot of people choose to do Month 1 2x, making the program 90 days as opposed to 60. At this point the program's going to be like 200 days anyway, because I'm messing with the schedule so much.
Last night I went out to dinner at the Jolly Fisherman Steakhouse. I was so proud of myself for ordering grilled salmon with double veg, and only eating half. I did snack on some apps, but everyone else got huge platters of fried fish, stuffed lobsters, twice baked potatoes, etc. I treated myself to their famous banana cream pie, and I'm so happy I did.
Saturday night Marvin and I made roti! Well, we didn't actually MAKE the roti but we made the filling. Roti is sort of like a caribbean wrap. You can get chicken roti, veggie roti, goat roti, etc... but they just call it "roti." The roti itself is kind of like a mix between a pita, tortilla, and naan. With Marvin's guidance, we made up our own recipe. It was sooooo good and healthy too!
Ingredients
Roti Shells (I bought these wraps called Lavash. They worked perfectly)

Roti filling
-1 package of chicken thighs (4, bone-in)
-1/2 onion, chopped
-3 garlic gloves, chopped
-1 potato, peeled & chopped
-Red curry powder (about 1.5 tablespoon)
-Chili powder (about 1 tablespoon)
-Thyme (about 1 teaspoon)
-Salt (about 1 teaspoon)
-Pepper (about 1 teaspoon)
-Vegetable oil (about 1 tablespoon)
-Water (about 1 cup)
Directions
-Clean chicken thighs (breasts will work too but thighs are tastier!). Season both sides of chicken heavily with salt, pepper, thyme & chili powder
-Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onions & garlic until soft
-Add chicken. Cook on each side for 5-7 min
-Add curry powder. Anywhere from 1-2 tblspoon will work
-Cook for 10 minutes
-Add potatoes & some more seasoning
-Cook for 2-3 minutes
-Add 1/2-2 cup of water, depending on how thick you want the sauce
-When it comes to a boil, lower to simmer and cover for up to one hour. Check chicken and stir occasionally. It should come off the bone easily when its done
-Scrape chicken off the bones with a fork. Remove bones
-Scoop into center of roti, roll up, and eat!

Blah
I can feel myself slipping off the healthy eating track and I need to get back on!
My body has seemed to figure out that due to the intense daily workouts, I can eat 1-2 unhealthy things per day and not gain weight. Not really new or record breaking information, but, at first I was so worried about gaining (or not losing) weight that I freaked it if I had one bite of something "not on the menu." But yesterday I stepped on the scale and was my lowest weight yet (still only 7-8 pounds total) but it made me feel like, "Hey, I can cheat and I'll still be okay!"
Let me explain what I mean by "cheating." Something carb-o-licious for breakfast as opposed to my daily yogurt (cereal, granola bar, or the worst of the worst: a bagel). And, one more carb-filled snack on my commute home from work (pretzels, hummus chips, baked lays). My lunches and dinners still remain healthy because all I cook and buy is healthy food so I have nothing more to eat. I just feel like my appetite between meals is out of control and I am ONLY craving salty crunchy snacks. And by salty/crunchy, carrot sticks or almonds are just not going to do it.
For example just now, I allowed myself to nearly lose control. This morning I brought a yogurt, but of course, was confronted by a huge pile of fresh bagels, donuts, and coffee. I managed to choose a whole wheat bagel with a smidge of veggie cream cheese. For lunch, I had some ground turkey with broccoli, and some carrots and hummus. You'd think by then I'd be full. But nope, nearly two hours later I find myself "taking a walk" only to end up at Mr. Melon, my favorite organic shop. And a few minutes later, I find my hand nearly scraping the bottom of a bag of hummus chips! Now I feel full and mad. And I KNOW all of these things are not technically "unhealthy" but I'm also going out to dinner tonight which pretty much guarantees more carbs and some sort of alcohol.
I just need to continually remind myself that I want to LOSE weight - not maintain my current weight - and this is going to mean eating less than I normally would. If I want to continue with my schedule of eating every 2-3 hours, I HAVE to stick to healthy, clean, low carb foods. I am not the same as everyone else. It kills me to watch my colleague, same age as me, eat bagels and egg sandwiches every day for breakfast, tacos, quesadillas, mcdonalds, heroes and subs every day for lunch, and snack on full boxes of cookies or full bags of chips and cheetos. Yet - she is a tiny twig... and never exercises! And she has great skin, hair, health, etc. My jealousy just needs to be a reminder that not everyone's metabolism runs at the same pace - mine being at the back of the pack, and I need to heavily modify how and what I eat to lose weight.
Sigh.
Anyways, back to work.

Sleepy Sunday
I literally have done nothing but sleep so far today... but it feels damn good! Now I'm curled up in the little sunny corner of my apartment on my chair that I never sit on, and feeling very happy to have had this lazy day. After this, I need to clean and vacuum and get going with Insanity, so let me bask in this moment.
Some life updates. I finally got over my Thursday hangover but my stomach is still acting sort of strange from the excessive grease and alcohol. I also didn't do Insanity on Friday night which means another 2-day skip. I'm realizing how hard of a time I have working out on Friday evenings... which means I just need to do a better job of sticking to the schedule Monday-Thurs and Sat/Sun. Friday, Marvin and I jumped into bed and then order Chinese (don't worry, I got something healthy). Then we literally fell asleep at like 8:30.
Saturday we slept late again, and spent the morning running some errands. I finally got to go to my favorite Farmers Market and picked out some yummy apples. The rest of the day was spent laying around, cleaning, and helping Marvin with his group project.
It was a nice night so we went out for some Mexican and sangria... only to be disappointed with tiny portions and weak drinks. Motivated, we came home and made our own sangria. This was my best recipe yet so I need to write it down.
Liz & Marvin's sexy Sangria:
Into a pitcher, mixed up
-The juice of one fresh orange, with pulp
-One orange, chopped into cubes, with rind
-One Apple chopped into cubes, with skin
-One tablespoon of raw sugar
-One shot of cognac
-About 3/4 bottle of good malbec
Pour into glasses over ice :)
Today I've pretty much been sleeping and researching apartment dividers (I'll get to that in a second). I simply had to have a bagel this morning, and I don't feel bad about because I got whole wheat with lowfat scallion cream cheese. Yum. It was so good.
Hopefully, Marvin & I will be moving in together soon... but even the "cheap" apartments are no so cheap. Probably the lowest we can go for 1 bedroom would be $2000, and that doesn't include living and moving costs. Also, a 1 bedroom for $2000 is going to be small :-( At the same time, we are trying to save up for more fun things in the future like weddings, houses, etc. By living at home Marvin can easily save but living apart is NOT fun.
Last night, Marvin casually brought up staying here, in my studio, together. I immediately turned down the suggestion (it had already crossed my mind) because I feel like we would be on top of each other. But this afternoon, I was sitting in my sunny garden (which is about the size of my entire apartment) thinking - Damn, I really don't want to leave this place. So I started looking up room dividers. My apartment is actually not so small for a studio on the upper east side... the main problem I feel would just bedtime and wake up time. We are often not on the same schedule and really need a separate space to sleep. I looked up some studio room divider pictures and here are some I found:
While none of these are the particular style and shape of my apartment or exact design I would like, I started to feel excited about the possibility of staying here. The benefits would be:
-Cheaper rent. Splitting $1500 between two people is much better than $2000-$2500 between two people
-No moving costs and more importantly, no moving STRESS
-Get to keep my beautiful backyard space
-No having to get used to a new area - I love where I live
-Buys us more time - my lease is up in August but Marvin won't finish school until December... meaning he will still have to go back and forth to LI 2-3 days a week. I'm not sure if it even makes sense to him to move in until he's done with school.

Regret
As serious as this title sounds, its actually not so serious.
From the moment I woke up this morning until right this very second, I am regretting my random night out last night. After an awesome day of eating and an incredible workout, I had a smoothie, showered, and got ready to meet my friend for a drink. I opted for the protein shake instead of dinner, since I knew I'd be having a glass of wine.
Two glasses of wine and an hour later, I'm buzzed enough to change my mind about the whole no dinner thing. Luckily, I was still clearheaded enough to order a Cobb Salad with fat free honey mustard dressing.
Two more glasses of wine and two more hours later, I now allow myself to share my friend's greasy chicken quesadilla and french fries.
Then... how could I resist a fifth glass on the house???
I stumbled into my apartment around 12:30 drunk, wide awake, and dizzy. Trying not going to sleep wasted, I kept myself busy until 1:30 researching about Kim K superstar and Ray J's new song. Don't ask.
This morning I woke up tired, nauseous, and angry at myself. I dragged myself through work all day, and kept my stomach settled by constantly eating snacks.... turkey pepperoni, crackers, carrots, hummus... on top of a wrap for breakfast and a pork chop for lunch. I also had two bottled starbucks frappacinos. Ugh.
So really, its not the 5 glasses of wine that was so bad (but that's definitely not good) its everything that the wine led to. The late night snacks... no sleep... a morning and afternoon filled with unhealthy food. To top it all off, I am way too tired and queasy to do Insanity tonight. I'd probably pass out from dehydration.
So, a plea to my body: Forgive me. Please, please, please don't lose momentum and please keep getting smaller, not bigger. Please wake up tomorrow and feel 100% better.

Spring Has Sprung
73 degrees today! All I want to do is sit outside in my yard with a glass of chardonnay and my kindle... but no, in just a few moments I will be sweating my ass off with Insanity. I can't believe its been nearly a week since I wrote. Here are some updates:
Wednesday:
-Breakfast provided for us at school: Trays full of eggs, pancakes, sausage, french toast, bacon... MY GOD. I somehow managed to control myself and make a normal sized plate of eggs, bacon, and fruit. Day 3 of my Insanity Re-do.. Cardio Recovery, not so bad.
Thursday
-Snacks provided for us at school... I was SO pleasantly surprised to walk in and see a table covered with smoothies!!! I had the Mango Berry Blast. Unfortunately the table was also covered with bags of McDonald's french fries. I limited myself to... ready... one fry. That's right, one. Pure Cardio & Cardio Abs today. Rough.
Friday
-Managed to get Marvin to order from Healthalicious for dinner. We also shared a bottle of wine, but all in all a healthy day. Plyometric Cardio Circuit. My fav.
Saturday
-Slept all morning, cooked breakfast with Marvin, then went out to Long Island. Stopped by my cousin's bridal shower and had the most amazing strawberry harvest beer. I also snacked on some unhealthy food and got to meet my new baby cousin! Saturday night we ate some leftover sandwiches and drank (another) bottle of wine. Oops! Insanity: Rest Day
Sunday
-Typical Sunday morning breakfast wrap and iced coffee. Slept for most of the day, went food shopping, and cooked a healthy dinner with Marvin. Re-started Month 2 again: Max Interval Circuit. Very tough. My knee has been hurting all week and I'm getting a little worried. Attempted to "clean" the apartment. Here's my updated clothes pile one week later. Sad, very sad.
Today
I was sooooo sleepy all day. Right now I am literally avoiding Insanity like the plague. I've been going back and forth about whether or not I should do it because its really not effective to do Insanity workouts when you are tired. However, I JUST started Month 2 again and I have to prove to myself that I can be committed to this, even though its gotten a lot harder. I will do it. Today was mostly healthy eating.
Breakfast
-Strawberry Sunrise chobani yogurt (new - love it)
Lunch
-Salad w/ homemade cornflake crusted chicken
-2 clementines
Snack
-Peppered beef jerky
-A piece of some type of homemade cornbread that was in the staff room
-2 coffees
Dinner
-Salad
-Boneless pork chop
-Grapes
I celebrated the nice weather today by buying a pack of Sam Summer! I probably won't drink most of it , but Marvin loves it so I know he'll be happy to see it in the fridge.

Getting Back on Track
Yesterday was my first day back on Insanity after skipping Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun. Yikes :-( Prior to that, I was already skipping around so I'm feeling pretty terrible about it. I decided to backtrack a week and pretend as if I'm in the last week of Month 1. This way, I can start back up again with the "easier" workouts and slowly transition my way into the Max workouts. Yesterday was in no way easy. I did my favorite workout from Month 1, Plyometric Cardio Circuit and I had to take a ton of breaks. The thing I love about the Month 1 workouts is that they are 45 minutes or less, including a warm-up and cool-down so the intensity only lasts for 20 minutes or so. The Max workouts are just brutal, going non-stop for 60 minutes.
After a week of birthday drinks, dinners, and Easter feasts, I was terrified to weigh myself today. I avoided the scale this morning but just forced myself to step on. I am sooo relieved to report that there is no change in my weight from a week ago. In fact, considering I am weighing myself in the evening, after a full day of eating, there might even be a slight loss. Either way, I feel I can breathe a sigh of relief. Here are some updates about my life for the past few days:
